Turbin is responsible for driving the firm’s steady, impressive growth in Hawaii over the last three years with a four-fold increase in caseloads
San Clemente, Calif. – May 16, 2022 – Gilson Daub, a leading workers’ compensation defense, subrogation, general and longshore liability law firm, today announced the promotion of Derek Turbin to managing partner of the Hawaii office.
Since joining Gilson Daub in 2019, Turbin played an integral role in establishing the firm’s presence in Hawaii. He grew the firm’s caseloads from 3 to 177 in three years. Additionally, under his leadership, Gilson Daub Hawaii serves as legal counsel for a number of Fortune 500 companies including a Costco, Hilton Hotels, and Hawaiian Airlines.

In addition to his role at Gilson Daub, Turbin also serves as a member of Make-A-Wish Hawaii’s Young Leaders’ Board, and is on the Pālolo Neighborhood Board in Honolulu. For Make-A-Wish, Turbin was one of the organizers of this year’s incredibly successful Wine for Wishes charity event. He also serves as a Wish-Ambassador, where he welcomes wish kids to Hawaii, and he helped grant a wish in August of 2020. Moreover, as a member of the Pālolo Neighborhood Board, Turbin led efforts to address land and rockslide issues in the back of Palolo Valleyand co-authored and introduced a resolution helping local businesses secure the right to mediate evictions if they defaulted on rent during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Born and raised in Honolulu, Turbin has deep roots in the state. His parents, Rai Saint Chu and Rich Turbin, have been lawyers and activists in Hawaii over the last four decades. Turbin graduated from Punahou School in 2002 where he served as captain of the track team, and lettered in basketball and football. Turbin was also an All-Conference football player and track athlete at Occidental College. In January of 2006 Turbin returned home to Aloha Stadium to play in the prestigious college football All-Star Game, the Hula Bowl.

Prior to joining Gilson Daub, Turbin served as a Staff attorney on the Judiciary Committee of the Hawaii State Legislature. Turbin also worked as an associate attorney with Hanna Brophy, Dietz, Gilmor & Chazen and Ellis Law, Corp.
Turbin received his J.D. from the University of San Francisco School of Law. He is licensed in both Hawaii and California.
