GILSON DAUB OPENS ILLINOIS OFFICE WITH PREEMINENT WORKERS’ COMP TEAM
The new office in Peoria, Illinois adds to the firm’s significant expansion in the Midwest
PEORIA, Ill. – May 3, 2023 – Gilson Daub, a leading workers’ compensation defense and subrogation law firm, today announced that it has opened an office in Peoria, Illinois as part of its ongoing strategic national expansion efforts. With the opening, the firm adds a group of three leading workers’ compensation defense lawyers, all from Ganan & Shapiro, P.C.: Bret Taylor, Tim Steil, and Tim Cushing. Three staff members from Ganan have also joined the Gilson Daub team. The opening of this office further signals the firm’s significant expansion in the Midwest, with Gilson Daub having just recently opened two new offices in St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri.
“We have been considering an office in Illinois for quite some time as a logical addition to our regional expansion, and when the opportunity with this talented team surfaced, we knew it was the right move,” said Brent Daub, Gilson Daub senior founding partner.

The new Illinois office will be supervised by Bret Taylor and Tim Steil, who each join Gilson Daub as a partner and managing attorney.
Bret Taylor brings nearly 30 years of experience to Gilson Daub and has represented employers in the defense of workers’ compensation and subrogation cases before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission and circuit and appellate courts. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, Peoria County Bar Association, the Workers’ Compensation Lawyers Association, and the Greater Peoria Claims Association. Bret graduated from the University of Iowa in 1990 and earned his J.D. from Creighton University in 1993. He is admitted to practice in Illinois.
Tim Steil has been handling workers’ compensation defense claims on behalf of businesses throughout the state of Illinois since 2001, representing employers and insurance carriers in the defense of workers’ compensation and subrogation matters before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission and circuit and appellate courts. He has served as chairman of the workers’ compensation committees for both the Illinois State Bar Association and the Peoria County Bar Association. Tim has also served as co-editor for the Illinois State Bar Association workers’ compensation newsletter. He is currently a member of the Illinois State Bar Association, Workers’ Compensation Law Association, Peoria County Bar Association, and the Greater Peoria Claims Association. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1998 and his J.D. from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2001.
Associate Tim Cushing also brings valuable experience to Gilson Daub. Before his time at Ganan, he served as an associate attorney for Jim Rochford and Associates, after earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2004 and his J.D. from Ave Maria School of Law in 2007.
These three Peoria-based attorneys will further partner with Alan Cotten, who recently joined Gilson Daub’s St. Louis team and is licensed to practice in both Missouri and Illinois. Alan brings over 35 years of experience in the fields of workers’ compensation and civil litigation, having defended a variety of clients, including large corporations, insurance companies, small businesses, and individuals. He also has experience representing plaintiffs and injured workers. Alan is admitted to Missouri and Illinois state and federal courts and the Supreme Court of the United States. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1983 and earned his J.D. from Southern Illinois University School of Law in 1986.
