New California workplace laws for 2021 tackle COVID outbreaks, family leave, gender pay gap

Cal/OSHA now has the ability to shut down a workplace if it exposes workers to an “imminent hazard” related to COVID-19. Workers in smaller companies have access to job-protected family leave. Workers have more time to file a labor complaint to the state…

Try to stay thankful and look at what has already been achieved. Sometimes you get so wrapped up in the now that you forget about everything it took to get you to where you are. Being grateful and looking back at all the successes can get you back into the right mindset to reduce stress.

How Calif. Employers Can Prepare For Virus Reporting Rules By Thu Do and Diana Tsudik (November 13, 2020)

As 2020 winds down — with no definitive end in sight to the pandemic — California employers must be mindful of all-new reporting obligations that require employers of all sizes to provide written notice of their industrial and nonindustrial COVID-19 cases to employees and local public health officials as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration…

What Prop. 22 could mean for the gig economy nationwide

With Prop. 22’s passage in California, Lyft, Uber, DoorDash, and other apps that rely on so-called gig workers will continue to treat those workers as independent contractors. (The SF Chronicle put the vote at 58 percent for, 41 percent against.) …

Future of Uber, Lyft on the line in fight to keep drivers from becoming employees

The future of the gig economy is on the ballot this November. But there are only two choices: one that changes how ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft operate and another that cedes control to the app makers over the drivers and workers…

1. Who inspires you?

John Maxwell, he was my pastor at Skyline Church in San Diego, and we all knew what an incredible leader he was at that time, but has just continued to be so impactful on such a positive level day in and day out. The ability to make people laugh and smile while delivering difficult messages is a gift.

2. What was the best concert you ever went to?

I have been to an insane amount of concerts and would be extremely difficult to limit this to one. Therefore, I’ll list some of my favorite live shows:

Nirvana (so glad I went that night)

U2

Metallica

Korn

Shinedown

Justin Timberlake (seriously impressive live)

Otherwise

3. Where’s your favorite place in the world?

San Clemente and not sucking up to the boss here lol. Growing up in San Diego, I would always stop in San Clemente on my way to OC or LA and stop at the pier and sit up on that cliff just enjoying the beauty of the ocean & reset a bit. San Clemente will always be a special place to me.

4. If you could be any animal, which would you be?

My English bulldog Phoebe aka Pheebs cause she is living the dream.

5. What’s the last book you read?

 Leader Shift by John Maxwell

6. What are you passionate about?

My passion is helping and impacting others in positive ways as much as possible.

7. What’s your favorite movie?

Just like with concerts, there are so many favorite movies so I’ll list some of my favorites:

Gladiator

American Sniper

Mystic River

Wedding Crashers

The Hangover

Four Christmases

The Adjustment Bureau

8. What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

I was a season ticket holder for the San Diego Padres in 1998 and my friend and I were approached to do an on field pregame contest. We stood on opposite foul lines and had to race to centerfield, put on everything that was in a trunk and race back to the foul line. So in front of 50,000 people on a Saturday night, I put on a gigantic nerf cowboy hat, coconut bra and a grass skirt and raced back to the foul line victorious. In doing so, I won a trip to Hawaii so it was worth it. Lol.

9. What are you currently watching on Netflix or TV?

Football!

Recently completed Cobra Kai on Netflix and that was fun. The right amount of cheesy. Patiently awaiting 4th season of Ozark!

10. If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?

Flying. The ability to soar and go anywhere at any time would be amazing (without traffic too!).

11. Who would you most like to swap places with for a day?

Fernando Tatis, Jr. , shortstop for the San Diego Padres – I would love to be 21 years-old again with that kind of talent. I would imagine every day is pretty great for him right now.

 12. What’s the best meal you ever had?

The first time I had a filet at Ruth Chris Steakhouse cooked 1800 degrees in butter and served on a 500 degree plate I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

13. If you could visit anywhere in the world you’ve never been, where would you go?

Bora Bora. I need that in my life one day. Although I hear amazing things about the Dominican Republic too.

14. What are some of your pet peeves?

Thank you e-mails and people that hit reply all when it is completely unnecessary. Traffic, I just don’t have time or patience for that. I literally feel like Michael Douglas in the movie Falling Down and just want to put my car in park and start walking. Lol.

15. What’s your secret talent that no one knows about?

I’m a decent bowler. I bowled right handed until about a year and a half ago (shattered my right elbow) and my high game right handed is 299 (3 times…ugh) and my high game left handed is 277. Perhaps one day, I will get my perfect game of 300.

16. Which four individuals, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with the most?

My grandmother, who was a mother to me and I lost 4 years ago.

My best friend, Aaron, who I lost to cancer when we were both 24 years-old.

My great grandfather who I never had a chance to meet, but according to my grandmother, I reminded her a lot of him. Plus he was a chemist that created the formulas for Seagram’s in the 1950’s.

Jonathan Davis, lead singer of Korn, would love to talk to him as a young musician with money and addiction to pioneering a band that has been together for over 25 years now while having children, finding sobriety and spirituality.

17. What is the best gift you ever received?

Sense of humor! The ability to laugh or make people laugh helps under so many different circumstances. This includes laughing at myself! One more thing I got from my grandmother!

18. Name one thing on your bucket list?

Going to Bora Bora and staying in one of those huts over the water…one day!

19. What is your favorite family tradition?

Christmas. My grandmother always made Christmas a very special time and instilled that in me from when I was little (not that I was ever little lol). She definitely taught the value of giving and the rewards of helping others.

20. What is your least favorite dessert?

Flan, sorry, but yuck!
