Gilson Daub Welcomes J.R. Webster Cucovatz To Lead New Sports Practice
Cucovatz joins the firm’s California team as Partner and will also help oversee Longshore work
San Clemente, Calif. – June 10, 2024 – Gilson Daub, a national law firm that focuses on workers’ compensation defense, subrogation, and civil litigation, today announced that J.R. Webster Cucovatz has joined the firm’s California team as Partner to lead its new practice area of sports-related workers’ compensation defense. Cucovatz, also having more than 12 years of experience in Longshore workers’ compensation, will oversee and expand Gilson Daub’s existing practice in this area as well.
“Sports and Longshore are two very specialized, yet very robust areas of workers’ compensation defense,” said Brent Daub, Gilson Daub’s senior founding partner. “Across our industry, we are seeing attorneys starting to age out of these niche practice areas without having invested in succession planning or having groomed future leaders to take their place.”
Daub adds, “Our firm sees this as an opportunity for growth, and adding a senior attorney like J.R., who is experienced but also passionate about building both a team and client base, is an exciting next step in our overall expansion. He is an excellent fit for the Gilson Daub culture, and I look forward to him being a strong leader within the firm.”
Cucovatz has extensive experience defending the interests of professional sports teams and their insurance carriers against claims brought by former professional athletes. He also began his career defending Federal Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act claims in the Ports of Long Beach, Los Angeles, Hueneme, and San Diego.
Immediately before joining Gilson Daub, he practiced at Testan Law, where he focused on all aspects of Workers’ Compensation defense. He completed his undergraduate education and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2008. Cucovatz then obtained a Juris Doctor degree from Chapman University School of Law in Orange, Calif. in 2012 where he graduated with an emphasis in International Law and served as Articles Editor of the Chapman Law Review.
“There is ripe expansion opportunity in both the sports and Longshore workers’ compensation defense practice areas,” remarked Cucovatz. “I’m excited to dig in to train and grow a team around these focuses. Gilson Daub is in growth mode, and I plan to play a big role in helping the firm achieve its goals.”
With the addition of J.R. Webster Cucovatz, Gilson Daub is poised to strengthen its leadership in the specialized fields of sports-related and Longshore workers’ compensation defense. This strategic expansion also underscores the firm’s commitment to providing unparalleled expertise and innovative solutions to its wide range of specialty clients. Gilson Daub looks forward to the development and enhanced service capabilities this new practice area will bring, reflecting the firm’s dedication to adapting and thriving in an ever-evolving legal landscape.
